to head to TSE - that would be The Special Event. Think of it as the Mecca for all event planners, designers, caterers, anyone connected with the event business. For me it's a time of renewing acquaintances with my fellow planners and designers as well as connecting with suppliers of all things fabulous and exciting.

This is where we are introduced to new products, new trends, the hot colors and more flowers, linens and sources than you can imagine. It makes for long days of walking the aisles.

In addition, there are so many workshops and courses that I would have to clone myself several times to take advantage of all of them!

For all of you planning a wedding, my yearly shot of adrenaline is the Wedding Event held during TSE. It is SO over the top. Can't wait. I'll post photos to Facebook.

Pewter and Sunshine . . .

We love the color combination so much that we designed a table for the January 2012 Tulsa Wedding Show using those colors for a bridal table fit for a very special couple.

Metallics are so very "in" this year and yellow always has a happy feel to it. Makes me smile. We concentrated the yellow down the center of the table with fabulous roses, ranunculas, orchids, crespedia, daffodils, calla lillies and sultry dusty miller all woven through mossy branches. Then we added silvery succulents for some awesome texture.

The muted tones of the linen let the flowers shine as the stars of the show and our brides bouquet repeated the yellow theme.

My thanks to Party8 for the wonderful paper elements, PartyPro for the tableware and chairs and of course to the uber special Artworks Photography for capturing the images.

1940"s Black Tie . . .

It was a year’s worth of planning and dreaming for my Bride and Groom. One of the best times I’ve had in a long time – my Bride could “see” her vision and describe it to me in detail; hence we were able to create it the way she wanted.

Early on, she asked for 1940's decor and theme to match the grandness of The Mayo. Guests were asked to dress Black Tie or Vintage 1940's and they were totally caught up in the theme. There were more peplums and fascinators than you can imagine!

The Mayo Hotel is beautiful but a challenge to set up when there are FOUR separate spaces involved. For this extravagant, over-the-top wedding, we went from ceremony to cocktails to dinner to after party changing colors and metallics along the way as well as spaces.

Our celebrity Bride chose RED for her wedding dress color – that’s right – RED. When the curtains parted for her entrance, I swear the entire crowd of guests let out one big “ahhhhhhhhh”. She was drop dead gorgeous going down the aisle to her handsome groom.

And not to be outdone, the Groom was stylish in his custom tux.

Oh, did I mention the “traveling violinist” we hired to announce the beginning of the wedding and later to lead guests from the ceremony to cocktails. She rocked!! And the couple's English Bulldog carried the rings down the aisle. He was mah-va-lous.

We started with red and gold, moved to gold and champagne and ended the night with the Bride in a WHITE short dress and FEATHERS everywhere in the black, white and red Club Setting on the Mezzanine of The Mayo. Local spin DJ Azland kept the guests on their feet and fabulous photographer Lisa Dunham created award winning movie posters of the couple as famous movie stars. My co-conspirators, Party Pro Rents, helped create a LOUNGE for guests and the one and only OMNI lit the entire event. For the Ceremony, the draping was spectacular due to Dwayne of Parties Plus Productions. PenWeddings recorded the entire event for posterity. Only the BEST for this event!

Overall, it ranks right up there as a favorite – not just because of the beautiful wedding but because of the adventuresome attitude of the Bride and Groom. Hugs to K & J!!

Happy 4th of July . . .

For most of my early childhood years, I thought people celebrated with firecrackers all because of MY birthday which is so close to the fourth. And no one in my family tried to change that impression.

Each year, there was homemade ice cream (with hot chocolate sauce and strawberries), Grammy’s fabulous banana nut cake and of course, FIREWORKS. We lived in the country so assuming that the wheat was safely out of the field, it was the perfect spot for Roman candles and loud and colorful bursts of fire.

I can only imagine how parents today would react if their children set off firecrackers the way we did, blowing up many an ant hill or crawdad hole. Somehow, we survived.

Unfortunately, with school came the inevitable history lesson and the REAL reason we celebrate the Fourth of July. But while it lasted, it was one great time!!!

My hero - Mabel Irene . . .

Mabel Irene . . .

Was a HUGE influence in my life. My maternal Grandmother lived but two miles away and was always available and on my side. In fact, from the beginning she expected nothing short of perfection from me. Her standard comment upon my announcement of an accomplishment was “well, I knew you could do that”.

She set the bar high. And without fail, when I finish the setup for an event nowadays and pause to check it out, I feel her looking over my shoulder and saying those words – “I knew you could do it”. If only she could have seen just ONE wedding that I’ve designed. And perhaps she does.

Grammy was an accomplished gardener and ceramicist. Her garden was always available to me and she was the one who encouraged me to mix flowers into bouquets. Her ceramics were award winning and I still treasure the pieces that I have – details were her signature. Many a time I watched her destroy a piece because it was not “perfect”. Ah, it runs in the blood. Her signature “Irene’s Ceramics, Hunter, OK” graces her legacy ceramics and I can only hope that she would approve of the work I do.

Here’s to you, Grammy, Happy Birthday, June 25^th, 1901.

But you'd have never known it. The bride was as cool as a cucumber in her beautiful lace covered, back revealing, slim fitting gown. She looked gorgeous as she made her way into the Tulsa Arboretum to marry the handsome man of her dreams. Congratulations Erika and Justin on a perfectly lovely wedding!

A naturally stunning background such as the Arboretum can provide the perfect setting for the bride and groom who want their love and commitment to be the focus of the day. A large magnolia tree set the stage for the ceremony as the couple repeated their vows.

Later the wedding party boarded a trolley for a photo tour through Woodward Park before returning to the Tulsa Historical Society for their Reception. Stay tuned for photos to come!

And they lived happily ever after . . .

It was British with a twist. All the pomp we expect from the Royal Family with some contemporary twists. Kate's dress with the lace coverage was to be expected since strapless just won't do in a Cathedral but the back with its pleated train was far more modern than her predecessors. And the shorter veil looked perfect but of course the tiara is very Royal - who wouldn't wear a tiara when you have so many choices and they all have REAL jewels in them.

Loved the maple trees lining the aisle and the woodsy ferns, branches and vibernums behind the altar. Very English countryside.

Disappointed in the bouquet. It seemed lost with the grandeur of the gown. Way too demure for such a majestic dress and such a tall bride. Obviously Kate liked it but her planner and florist should have given her better advice.

Mother of the Bride looked lovely in her powder blue and Camilla's dress was well coordinated. The Queen chose yellow - an interesting color which certainly stood out. I do love the hats - except the horrible ones worn by Prince Andrew's and the absent Fergie's daughters - absolutely NOT flattering or fashion worthy.

Always interesting to see the Royals interract amongst themselves. The Queen shook hands with Camilla but Prince Philip kissed her on the cheek. At least she kissed her own son, Charlie, on the cheek.

Thought the most fun by far was Prince Harry. That boy looks like he knows to have a good time and the pressure of "most eligible bachelor" is now on him. Bet there are plenty of takers.

Just waiting to see what the rest of the day brings. The KISS and hopefully a FUN dress for the reception.

WHO will be watching? . . .

This is a wedding planner's dream - BIG wedding - beautiful bride. Handsome (in a British sort of way) groom.

So here we are - the night before the Royal Wedding. And what do we suppose Kate and William are doing this evening? If they were just average, there would be a rehearsal and a rehearsal dinner, but they are anything but average. The rehearsal is over - and Kate is ensconced at a five star hotel. Bet she's enjoying her last night of freedom. What would it be like to marry a Prince and a future King? Hmmmm. Can't imagine.

But even the couples who are NOT royals go through the same type of experience. That last minute fluttering in the stomach. I've had grooms who forget where they're supposed to stand or brides that leave their bouquets at the altar or actually forget the groom's name!

Thirty years ago, I watched Diana and Charles marry at a time when there was no opportunity to record the event and watch later. Now I simply choose to experience the wedding of the decade in real time. Stay tuned.

Dungeons & Dragons - Wedding of the Week

When my bride and groom listed “Dungeons and Dragons” gaming as one of their mutual interests, I knew we had an unusual wedding to plan. This couple knew what they wanted and were all for turning their special day into a unique and special event.

They started with a design for their cake featuring a castle and dragon then added an ice sculpture by the fabulous Millinium Ice of a Titan Warrior, battle axe and all! The backdrop for this wedding was perfect – Harwelden Mansion with its dark wood, English accents and massive “throne” chairs we used for the Bride and Groom’s sweetheart table.

Guests witnessed the ceremony decorated with an archway of vines and flowers created especially for our Bride by Gary Cooper of Aaron’s Flowers then dined on tasty fare catered by The Brasserie.

We were excited to create custom tablescapes for the theme with large globe terrariums filled with succulents and orchids. The Dungeons and Dragons cake area featured the large Titan Warrior overlooking the cake surrounded by trees dripping with moss and orchids.

And, of course, the friendly “Harwelden Dragon” watched over the sunroom just in case he was needed!

It was a magical night and we look forward to wonderful photographs by Jesse Reich Photography and a memorable video by Cherished Traditions. Our thanks to Jennifer and Christian for the opportunity to plan something so unique – we had so much fun!

Menu Cards - to have or not to have . . .

Why do I need a menu card anyway?

You may consider menu cards strictly for the banquet scene or think it is a pompous tradition. But when it comes to YOUR wedding, you might want to reconsider.

Menu cards serve a practical function to let your guests know WHAT they will be eating. If your guest has a dietary restriction or is just plain picky, she will know in advance to ask for a vegetarian plate from the server or to avoid the hors d’oeuvre with the peanut sauce.

If it’s a buffet, you may opt for small signs located by the food but a menu card works equally well here as well.

The other benefit from a purely aesthetic standpoint is that a menu card announces that your event is special, you took the time to consider all the details. Of course, it doesn’t have to be a card, the menu could be written on a small chalkboard and placed one per table or one per room if the size of the gathering is small.

We loved the menu cards at the Special Event Wedding Luncheon – each one was unique and each one fit perfectly with the overall design of the table.

And there were plenty of them at the Special Event Wedding Luncheon in Phoenix. Seven hundred planners in one room designed to knock our socks off and show off the latest in design - linens, florals, paperie, wedding gowns, food and cakes.

I loved the setup this year – walking into a room where models were showcased in the latest wedding gown styles. It was minimalist this year with the models framed in large window frames and cakes “floating” on acrylic pedestals.

Then on to the reception with tables that took the words “over the top” to a new level. And I don’t mean ruffles and frou frou. Each designer created a reception table to integrate with the others so that the overall effect was truly “wow”. Tis the season. . .

For engagement rings to make an appearance under the tree or pop out of New Year’s Eve champagne glasses. If you’re one of those couples who are beginning to plan your wedding – let’s talk – and dispel a few misconceptions:

1. The DRESS is not the first item you need – every bride dreams of that perfect dress but there are issues to consider before you purchase the dress.

2. You can select a venue by shopping online without a site visit – wrong. Even if you’re from out of town, you need eyes on the ground who can testify to the ACTUAL pros and cons of the site you’re considering.

3. Outdoor weddings are less expensive – you’re SO in love with the look, you may not realize that virtually everything has to be purchased/rented for an outdoor wedding.

4. Doing it yourself is just a matter of buying a couple of books, an organizer and watching wedding shows on TV – books and magazines are great – I use them all the time. BUT every wedding is unique and you’ll need to fashion YOUR wedding YOUR way.

5. Your friends and relatives can substitute for videographers or other professionals – trust me, this day is too important to leave anything to chance. Well meaning uncles and cousins can help you take the gifts to the car, but PLEASE hire a pro for the important tasks.

6. You MUST select your date before you find a reception venue – unless there is only ONE day in the entire year that will work for you, check out the available spaces before you settle on the date. And do consider off season or a day other than a Saturday if you’re working with a tight budget.

7. There’s no need to discuss the budget until later in the process. Uh NO! Painful as it may seem, NOW is the time to determine a budget for the wedding with everyone who will be involved. If her parents are paying for the entire event, great – ask them what they are comfortable spending. Don’t assume that the sky is the limit. If you-the couple- and his parents, or grandparents, godparents, etc. are willing to take over some part, it’s better to find out now. BUT just because someone else is contributing doesn’t mean they have carte blanche to make the decisions. Combine all the amounts to see just where you are in terms of available cash. And remember at least ONE THIRD of the total amount will be due in the last three weeks before the wedding.

8. Guys are just as absorbed in wedding plans as their ladies – well, maybe not so much. I find that even the most considerate and willing grooms don’t want to talk colors and attendants all the time. Have a frank discussion right away about how much HE wants to hear about the wedding and then make sure you schedule appointments around the items he really cares about.

9. The guest list can wait until later – NO. Actually this is probably the first thing you should tackle even before you decide on a budget. After all, the number of people who actually attend your wedding have a big impact on the amount of money you will spend. AND you don’t want to rent a venue until you know how many people it needs to accommodate.

10. Wedding planners are too expensive – I would be remiss if I didn’t address this one. Time after time, my clients tell me it’s the best money they ever spent on the wedding. From helping them avoid catastrophes with venue selections and vendors to guidance on etiquette and family disagreements, a professional can save your sanity and allow you to actually ENJOY this time of your life. Many “event planners” are out there from those employed by the venues themselves to DJs and florists – but at the end of the day, who do you want representing YOU? Someone whose paycheck is signed by a one time vendor you will use or someone who works for YOU?

The new (younger) man in my life . . .

His name is Jackson and I am completely in love with him – all 7 pounds 14 ounces. For months we’ve been waiting to meet our newest grandson and he arrived on December 23rd. After two days in the hospital, our daughter, Ashley and her hubby, Matt brought the little bundle home on Christmas Day to begin their life as a family.

After ten years without a baby in the family, it’s been a treat to watch this little guy as he gets used to his surroundings. Daughter Ashley and I worked on the nursery theme of doggies and bright colors while Matt painted and set up furniture.

It will be difficult to be away from him but hopefully technology will allow us to watch him grow and then there’s always frequent flier miles!

Magic Winter Wedding . . .

It was a crisp, cool winter evening as Lauren and Jonathan said their vows at Trinity Episcopal Church in Tulsa. What a beautiful setting at this time of year and Lauren was stunning as she walked down the aisle.
We love Trinity and the fabulous accoustics that made special music by organist Casey Cantwell and trumpeter Tim McFadden seem to fill the entire space. Their rendition of "Marriage at Cana" was simply over the top.
The couple and their attendants joined family and friends at the Mayo Hotel for a party that was both elegant and fun. Dave and the Wavetones entertained all evening long with fabulous music and the crowd danced the night away.
Lauren's colors of Claret and Platinum were represented everywhere from her linens to the menu cards to the wedding cake by Icing on the Top - one of our favorite designers.
We love it when a bride gives direction and then lets us design her 'look" with a fair amount of flexibility. With Lauren and Jon living in Waco and their graduation from Baylor only a week before the wedding, it was critical to do long distance planning in advance and that's what we did.
We're looking forward to the photographs by Chris Humphrey Photographer and a video of the entire evening by Cherished Traditions. Meanwhile, here are a few of our favorite things. Wishing you wedding success . . . Lynn

When your wedding is over it’s important to still love your wedding regardless of what other people are saying and doing for years to come.

Wedding décor, styles, and fashions will always change and more and more people will always get married.

When planning your wedding, make it personal and sentimental. You can do this and have a darling design. Don’t try to re-create a carbon copy of a friend’s wedding that was popular. Chose those tall tower vase centerpieces and hanging crystals because YOU love them and because they say something about your personality. Don’t choose them because they’re the signature style of 2011. Choose a design because you will always remember that special day.

Choose wedding décor, a dress, menu items and an overall theme that speaks to you, as a couple. You won’t care if next years wedding theme is blue and silver while you chose orange and white at your wedding since orange represents the first day you and your husband met at the beach in Orange County years ago. Get the idea? Stay true to you and you will always love your wedding, as it will be dear to your heart for years to come.

So - what does a wedding planner do? . . .

Friday, I had the opportunity to speak to several Adult and Family Living classes at Bixby High School. And as usual, the juniors and seniors had a number of questions.

And the first questions was: So what does a Wedding Planner DO?

My answer is: LISTEN to the Bride and Groom.

This is YOUR day and your chance to have every dream fulfilled. At Lasting Impressions, we start with an in depth questionnaire and a two hour “getting to know you” session. That’s when I want to hear your dreams, listen to your concerns and look at any photos, tear sheets from magazines, or websites that you absolutely LOVE or HATE.

If you have already committed to certain vendors (that would be service providers such as photographers or caterers) then we are happy to work with them. But if you don’t know who would fit into your game plan and/or budget, then our expertise is matching vendors to client. After all, this is our BUSINESS and we require vendors to adhere to high standards if they expect to be recommended by us. I would rather tell you the truth about a vendor than deal with a costly mistake later down the road.

The second question was: Do YOU set the budget? NO – the client sets the budget. I don’t care what your budget is – I only care that you tell me the truth so that we can select the appropriate venue, choose the appropriate vendors and design the “look” without breaking the budget. It’s probably my finance background, but I LOVE a balanced spreadsheet.

Third question: What if I want PINK and you think that’s too frou frou? I’ll say it again: it’s YOUR day. You determine what you like and what your DREAM is. I will implement it so that the entire wedding and reception reflect your personality.

At LI, we’ve never done a copy cat wedding. Each and every one of our weddings is unique – representative of the Bride and Groom. Even the two sisters whose weddings we did two years apart, were completely different. You want red and gold everywhere, that’s what you get. You LOVE daisies – we will have daisies all over the place.

And lastly, WHEN should you hire a wedding planner? My answer is FIRST. The reason is that I can save you time and effort in searching for the best vendors, I can keep you from making costly mistakes and I can WATCH your budget like Scrooge. Together, we’ll determine what is MOST important , what is NEXT important and then what you would LOVE to include if the budget allows.

So that’s my 45 minute class session. It was a delight to visit Bixby High School and share some wedding planning secrets.

Grooms this one is for you!

Throughout the history of weddings there has always been that one guy…the guy who sets up camp at the bar and then does really stupid stuff He thinks it’s hilarious, but it’s really not. But it needs to be addressed. Rule number one…the Groom is NEVER involved, and a wise man once said…”Be nice…until it’s time not to be nice."

The hotel staff is there to help you!Whether you plan the wedding yourself or hire a planner, you should always address the issue with the venue staff prior to the event. So if you don’t have a planner (shame on you) head over to the nearest hotel staff and let them know the deal. It can be the server at your table or you can ask the server to send over the banquet manager. Fill them in on the details and tell them what you want to be done. Don’t leave any room for error<. You can ask them to "keep an eye” on the person, or just cut them off. If they are going to cut them off, I suggest having a couple (depending on the size of the guest) of staff at the bar when the barkeep tells the guest the sad, sad news. Things may get heated, but the hotel management will know what to do. If the guests comes to you after the fact. Tell your guests that the hotel has rules and they were just following them. Again, this shifts any blame AWAY from you and all is well with the world.

There are times that we must “cut off” guests at the bar. When it’s necessary, we ask the catering or bartending staff to handle the situation. If you find yourself having to deal with THAT guy at your wedding you (as the Groom) never get involved! Your first plan of attack is to go to your planner, let them know what is going on and have them deal with it. This way, you don’t get dragged into the problem, especially if it’s a family member or close friend. This way the planner is the bad guy and your family Christmas dinner will be free of “hey, remember when you cut me off at your wedding” comments. Planners know how to deal with these issues and to be honest, it’s your day, you need to enjoy it and this will not be fun for you in any way shape or form.

Who never is dealing with this issue needs to know that violence isNOT an option. Even if the guest takes a swing, be nice!!! . Again, ask the staff tocalmly explain that the hotel has decided to stop serving them, they can stay but they will have to stop drinking. As an event planner, I have done weddings with private security and always have a pre-event meeting where we discuss possible situations and how to handle them.

So back to the number one RULE…as a Groom, NEVER, EVER get involved. I mean NEVER!!! Take care of it, yes, but never address the guest in person. This is your day and you don’t need that. You have people there that can take care of it for you. Dance with your Bride, talk to your friends and have someone else deal with THAT guy(person).

Do not lose friends, hire a wedding planner

A survey done by Mercure Hotels of 1000 couples found that 60% of couples fall out with friends and family over wedding planning. Sad, but I know it’s true. It’s often why couples come to us to help them plan their wedding.

The wedding that was WOW . . .

When Rachelle said she wanted "red and romantic" we took her seriously. And romantic it was - from the magical gold and red ceremony in the Grand Hall of The Mayo Hotel to the royal purple room for the Persian blessing ceremony and cocktails for the guests. But the hit of the evening had to be the RED reception in the Crystal Ballroom. The tables were covered in luscious red linens and over 1,300 red roses made the tables look as if they were designed for royalty.

And speaking of royalty - our couple looked the part. Rachelle chose a form fitting dress that flowed gracefully as she made her way around the balcony and down the stairs to meet handsome groom Ryan for the ceremony. After their vows were said, the couple descended the staircase and walked down the aisle on a fabulous Persian carpet aisle runner compliments of Amini's Galleria.

After dinner in the Crystal Ballroom, guests danced to the sounds of Live 80 and partied the night away. Before the spectacular cake from Icing on the Top could be cut, the couple had to "buy" the cake knife from the sisters of the bride and groom - another Persian custom.

5 Questions to discuss before getting married!

Many pre-marriage topics seem like no brainers. However, just because YOU are sure of what you want, doesn’t mean you have necessarily discussed it out loud with your fiancé, and most importantly, agreed on it. So before you get married there are a few questions you should ask your fiancé or even yourself to avoid a disaster! If you can be on the same page about the most important base issues and morals that you have, there’s no doubt that you’ll have an amazing marriage and a long lasting happy relationship where you can work through all of your little disagreements.
1.) Do you want kids and how will your raise them? Reality TV reminds us, this is a very important question. Ask your fiancé specifically what he or she wants. There’s a big difference between having one child and having four. This will also lead to the question to who will raise them? Are you prepared to stay at home and take care of them? If not, would you be comfortable with your husband watching them or leaving them at a daycare while you work?
2.) Where do we stand financially? Where you stand financially may be ever changing. That’s why this is such an important question. You may be ok with where you stand now. But what if things changed? Are you ok with having less money than you currently have? If not, what will you do to ensure that it doesn’t happen? The greatly feared, yet uncommonly asked question regarding the pre-nup should also be discussed. It’s uncomfortable but now’s the time to get it out of the way. Also consider what the circumstances would be of you or your fiancé staying at home and if you would both be ok with that.
3.) If one of you got a career opportunity elsewhere, would you move? Maybe you are happily nestled in a beautiful home right now with tons of friends and family nearby or perhaps you are adventurous travelers who thrive on new and exciting places to live. Either way, if the opportunity to move ever came up you need to talk about if and when you would be willing to change your living location.
4.) What’s your definition of being successful? Success means different things to different people. It could mean driving a fabulous car, having a steady job and a beautiful home. It could also mean, being healthy, having children and getting lots of time off. Make sure you know what your definition is as well as your fiancés’.
5.) Why are we getting married? This is similar to one of those job interview questions that may have you stumbling at first. For example: What are your best attributes? It’s not that you don’t have any. It’s just hard to answer questions like this about yourself sometimes. Jot down a list of some specific reasons why you are getting married. This should make you feel confident and happy about your future marriage and future decisions together.

2. See any photos or videos that you have posted as a couple (great for posting engagement shoot photos)

3. Download maps or itineraries needed for the wedding

4. Take quizzes or polls that you have created

This will make your life easier as a wedding planner or as a couple planning an upcoming wedding. You can even choose your domain name, song, style and color. This website can exist as long as you want it to and therefore be a great online memory of your wedding. The website is a great supplementary way to involve your guests and organize your wedding plans. Creating a website will cut down on info in your invitations. Nobody wants ten pages of wedding info and instructions in the mail.

Our only word of advice is to not solely rely on this website and always have another means of communicating with your guests. Reasons being, not all guests are tech savvy or have the internet and not all guests check the website regularly for updates or invitations. Also in today’s age, nothing beats receiving hard copy snail mail addressed to your name with neat lacy writing!

Taking the Heat with tropicals . . .

We were hired to plan a 40th anniversary party to be held in August outside by the pool. On a day when the temperatures had been over the century mark all week, we were knee deep in tropical flowers and literally fighting over who got to go in the pool to anchor the pool arrangement.

Nothing says summer like an upscale tropical inspired theme. In this case, we brought in Timothy Sean Fitzgerald for absolutely sumptious food and used bright, happy colors to welcome guests and the couple who have been together 40 whole years. And of course, there was an anniversary cake by the incomparable Icing on the Top. Delicious!!

Surprise . . . it's a party

August was the month for surprises - birthday and anniversary - the BIG 40 in both cases.

First there was the surprise party for a guy who everyone thought could NOT be surprised - but he was. Family and friends spent months thinking about how to get him to the party without him finding out. Well it worked!

The theme was Vegas and we went all out with decor and food.

When you come right down to it, I’m a sentimental fool. I simply LOVE weddings that are filled with meaning for the bride and groom. Last weekend was a perfect example. We took our inspiration from items that Susannah treasures and then incorporated them into the wedding and reception.

Our bride and groom have families rich with Native American heritage and they could not have chosen a more appropriate site to repeat their vows.

The Cherokee Heritage Center located in Park Hill, Oklahoma, is a testament to the culture and life ways of the Cherokee people. Located on the original site of the first female Indian seminary, the grounds feature a fountain and three of the remaining columns from the original site. Susannah and Dustin said their “I do’s” in front of those columns.

It was the culmination of a journey for these two and the joining of two families who believe that family really matters. Susannah’s 96 year old great grandmother gave the prayer before dinner and when the toasting began, all of the parents joined together to welcome the Bride and Groom into their respective families.
Later the evening took a more modern turn, as guests dined and danced at NSU Tahlequah. We decorated the room in Susannah’s colors of slate blue and plum and accented tables with Victorian cloches, potted tulips and hundreds of hydrangeas surrounded by seashells and candles.

We love Five Oaks Lodge and it was the setting for Deidra and Olen’s romantic exchange of vows by the lake with the reception following. There were cocktails on the deck and dinner and dancing inside the Lodge.
Dinner by FrostBites Catering had the guests raving over the food and then they were up and dancing to music with the fabulous Roman of DJ Connections.
Deidra’s colors of sage and gold were carried throughout the reception with wonderful green hydrangeas and lots of “bling” on the tables. It was a magical evening and it concluded with an incredible grand exit in a helicopter!

Born to Buck and Candy in Kentucky, Adopted by Lynn and Dick in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Alpha to Sooner who came along in 2001. Cousin to Maverick, Minnie, Barkley (deceased), Cajun, Maddie and Snitch.
What I wanted was a sweet, cuddly Beagle who would curl up beside me, go for walks and greet me at the door. Two out of three is not bad. Cuddly she was not!
The book I read said to “bond” with your new puppy. So bond we did. She went everywhere with me, to my office, in the car, all over the yard. And it worked. So well that when I took a new job outside the home, she suffered “separation anxiety” and bent the heavy crate wires with her bare teeth. (consequently she lost most of them!)
Portia had an insatiable appetite – for anything soft: carpet, cushions, furniture, leather shoes, toys – not her own. There are still signs of wear and tear in parts of the house.
But she never met a stranger – until the night Sooner arrived in our lives – a furry little six week old Springer who demanded her attention. She wouldn’t look at me for three days all because I held the little furball while he got adjusted to his new surroundings. It was not long until they were playpals and though he outgrew her in just a few months, she remained Alpha to the end.
Up until the last two years, people would stop us on walks and comment on the “puppy” when she was actually in her teens (dog years). The floppy ears and the wagging Beagle tail as well as her youthful personality let her lie about her age. The telltale hound baying was a dead giveaway that she had found a squirrel – or a bird – or a waving piece of grass.
Portia had a good life. She was well traveled, spoiled rotten. And I think she knew it. I like to think she is running in green fields with those floppy ears and wagging tail chasing a rabbit and then rewarded with a piece of bacon.

A pink tulle wedding in Martha Stewart Weddings! We haven’t seen tulle in years and now there’s an entire wedding built around the pink tutu look.

Of course, only Martha can pull it off with a style that says class all the way. Still, I'm a little skeptical that too many brides are going to waltz down the aisle in a rendition of their five year old ballerina costume.

We are seeing more layering of bridal gowns and yes, tulle is being used on those gowns; however, it's the more expensive French tulle that has a soft feel and practically "floats" over the underlayer of the dress.

So at the Conference I attended in San Diego, two lucky? Souls were chosen to sit in the hot seat while our commentator/leader and the entire group of attendees went over our businesses with no leniency.

It’s refreshing to see wedding planners from across the US and Canada come together and genuinely support one another with suggestions, testimonials and ideas for making our clients’ weddings even better.

We’re always looking for solutions to problems – ideas for streamlining processes and the latest industry information that will help our clients. So if taking the “hot seat” will help, it was well worth it.

Today I have my entrepreneur hat on.

After coming out of corporate America, it was quite a shock to deal with the day to day processes that running a business of your own entails. No accounting or IT department to answer questions or fix your PC when needed. AND no one to give you pep talks like the boss or your peers.

So it’s especially refreshing to spend a day in the presence of other women who have taken their businesses to high levels and to hear how they got there, what steps they took that bear repeating and the advice they offer to those of us who ascribe to high levels of professionalism in our own businesses.

The International Women’s Forum Leadership Foundation, the Oklahoma International Women’s Forum and the OSU Spears School of Business present the Annual Women’s Business Leadership Conference every year and this year it was exceptional. If you’re in the workforce – or even if you’re not – it’s inspirational to be among other women who have made such huge strides in their careers and paved the way for those who follow. Great day.

Including driving several miles north of Tulsa to attend the Tulsa Wedding Show vendor’s meeting at the stunning Bridle Creek Lodge. If you’re looking for the “lodge look” this place has all the features you’ll need – beautiful views (well last night the fog sort of blocked the views), cabins for your guests and a reception hall that will seat well over 200 guests. The average national cost of a wedding just dropped 10.2% - down to $19,581 for 2009 compared compared to $21,814 in 2008 according the The Wedding Report.

I personally think Tulsa has not fallen quite that far but I do see couples watching their budgets very carefully – as they should. And again, as I’ve been telling my brides and grooms forever – the easiest way to cut costs is to reduce the number of guests. The Wedding Report states that the” average number of guests in 2009 was 128, a decline of 11.7% from 145 in 2008”.

They also state that “couples spent 50.8% less on anklets, 44.1% less on gifts for their parents, and 36.4% less on reception menus”. Anklets???? Must be an East coast thing. BUT the increase in spending was on “Musician/s, Soloist, or Ensemble, Photographer, and wedding dress”. We’re fortunate in this part of the country to have access to a number of affordable luxuries that the brides and grooms in other parts of the country don’t have. Venues are generally lower priced, musicians are not over the top and add that special accent to the ceremony or reception and we have some of the best photographers in the nation. So don’t cry for us! We may be right in the middle of the country but we’re making it just fine where our weddings are concerned!! Check out Katie and Chris's beautiful wedding. I’m waiting . . .

For the monumental storm to appear. Not that I want to jinx anything by not believing, but honestly the way people were acting today, you’d think the end of the world is about to take place. Note the empty shelves at the grocery store!

Last night all I needed was some fat free half and half but the grocery store where it lives was packed to the gills with people piling groceries into their carts as if they were going to be away from civilization for ninety days! Honestly, a decently stocked pantry could surely keep most people from starving throughout any known Oklahoma ice storm. But then again, maybe I’m asking for trouble.

My pot of stew is on the stove, the wood is stacked and the wine is chilling.

It’s the new Kid in town . . .

I find there are two sides of the aisle where children at weddings are concerned: some of our clients want every little cousin and neighbor sharing their day. But the majority is on the other side of the aisle. One frequent question I am asked is “what do we do if our guests bring children?”

In the past, we’ve searched for babysitters, hired hotel babysitters and put out the word that this is an adults only event. Now, it seems, there’s a new solution.

Kids at Play offers quality, professional child sitting for our clients as a perk to their guests. Maybe baby Becky is on a two hour nursing schedule and Mom just cannot leave her at home or Junior Jake is in town with his parents and they’d like to have him close by not back at the hotel with who knows who?

Even your precious ring bearer and flower girl may absolutely melt down after they’ve made their grand entrance at the wedding. And did you really spend thousands of dollars on a band only to watch 10-15 children occupy the dance floor space and keep adults on the perimeter?

High school isn’t what it used to be . . .

Last week I had a unique opportunity to visit Bixby High School as a guest speaker in Ms. Davis’ Adult and Family Living Class. The students are researching various professions and wanted to hear what a wedding consultant actually does. Probably were major disappointed when a JLo look-a-like didn’t show up!

Good group – most have had some experience with older brothers or sisters getting married or else they’re tuned in to some of the many wedding oriented shows on television. At any rate, they were a terrific bunch and it’s always fun to spend time with the younger generation. In addition to researching various careers, they’re also learning what it takes to be a parent. (Not sure about the parenting and wedding planning going on at the same time!) So I was introduced to their “children”.

These “babies” cost about $800 apiece and are fully computer programmable. They require all the attention that a real baby does – eating, burping, changing of diapers, careful handling – and the computer chip knows if their needs are not met. Better to learn the responsibility of parenting in a classroom than have it staring you in the face at a very young age without ANY warning. I can only imagine the frustration that must set in when the “baby” will not stop crying at 2 am. (well, actually, I KNOW what that feels like – the memories never fade).

Birds that is. We saw them all over the Dallas Market Center last week – in Christmas trees, on candleholders, in materials and on the covers of books. The whole “organic, woodsy” theme was running rampant through the showrooms. We love them.

Word of Warning . . .

Most of us take more safety precautions against being robbed during the holiday season but I'm here to tell you - DON'T LET YOUR GUARD DOWN. My car was broken into yesterday - broad daylight - busy parking lot - people coming and going.

Now it's not that I think people who pursue this type of behavior are reading my blog, BUT for those of you who do, take this to heart: do not leave anything valuable in your car. The thief got all my banking information as well as two days worth of mail (and bills I'm sure).

AND of course, the window has to be replaced along with a rather expensive repair to the door. Then there's all the time it takes to follow up. So - either travel light or leave your "stuff" at home!

Rainy Day Wedding . . .

Last Fall, I was in Enid for a weekend with my Mother. And as a side bar -

It’s a nightmare come true for a wedding planner. And I’m watching from afar . . .

The Bride dreams of an outdoor wedding in her parents’ back yard and the day arrives: Rain was forecast and the day was overcast. I watched with ongoing anxiety as the neighbor’s backyard across from my Mother’s filled with white chairs and the florists scattered BUSHELS of rose petals down an aisle which had to be soggy by the time the bride walked down it. It was a 6:30 wedding and by 6:15 guests were scattered among the trees with a sea of umbrellas. No one wanted to sit in the chairs with the rain falling. The smartest thing I saw was that the ushers carried towels with them as they tried to seat the guests and wipe off chairs at the same time.

By the time the wedding was supposed to start the rain was falling in earnest. I stood across the creek with my camera and watched the groom and groomsmen file in without umbrellas. Then the bridesmaids and bride arrived by golf cart and waited under the trees for the cue by the wedding planners. (totally without cover of umbrellas).

If I had been the officiant I would have scurried on through the vows and moved to the “I now pronounce you husband and wife”. But oh, no, there was even a soloist. The music was canned – no self respecting string quartet would have come near the wet surroundings with their expensive instruments.

As soon as the final “I do” was exchanged, the wedding party moved quickly down the aisle and on to the tent set on the front lawn (which is where I would have MOVED the wedding to as the rain began falling).

It’a a quandry – to have an outdoor wedding or not. And in Oklahoma – you better hedge your bets! At least this couple will have a great story to tell their grandchildren.

Brides, Brides and More Brides . . .

What a great day to be inside and warm at the Tulsa Wedding Show held out at the Renaissance Hotel yesterday. Lasting Impressions has been at this show for a number of years but I think this has to be the largest group of brides to ever walk through the door.

And, maybe the BEST group. We talked with hundreds of happy young couples in all stages of planning their Very Important Day. Not surprisingly, there are still some people out there who wait until four or five months before the big day to line up the vendors they need. And that can make for some stressed out brides!

The trend I see is to longer engagements and therefore, longer periods of time to plan the wedding. That makes good sense and is probably the key to keeping the blood pressure in check. The other key is to line up your wedding planner EARLY and get started. The early worm and all that . . .

It was a great day and we enjoyed meeting each and every bride, groom, MOB, FOB, MOG and FOG (well come to think of it, not sure I met a Father of the Groom).

A big shout out to Vicki Taylor and the Tulsa Wedding Show for producing a first class event. And of course to the Tulsa Renaissance Hotel for making our lives easier! See below for photos of the day.

Our display table featured the 2010 color of the year - Turquoise - along with shades of purple and green. Think Peacock feathers. We got lots of comments from Brides who are planning some combination of these colors in their own weddings.

The tables are a great way to show off our style and offer inspiration to the Brides who want to add some pizzaz to their own reception tables.

Our LI designed centerpiece featured green goddess callas,eggplant callas, cool water roses, cymbidium orchids, purple misty and hydrangeas, with green trachelium and surrounded by satellite arrangements of deep purple carnations, orchids and reindeer moss.

We like centerpieces either short enough for guests to see over or like this one, tall enough to let guests see through to the other side of the table. We also like the square table we used - it adds variety and will still seat eight guests.

Our linens are always special and we used fabulous designer linens available through LI as well as some incredible napkin rings we found on a recent buying trip. Note the wonderful, coordinated menu cards by The Inviting Place.

It's amazing how many items come in Turquoise, like the individual sized Asti Spumante bottles shown here in our own wine coolers.

And who could resist favors of sparkly chocolate bon bons placed in these precious Turquoise cups?

And, OK, it's not bad being surrounded by a bunch of hunky "groom models" who were participating in the style show and just dropped by the LI booth. It's a tough job but someone has to do it! Stay warm - Lynn

If you haven't seen the latest copy of Brides of Oklahoma - that wonderful coffee table sized tome of Oklahoma weddings - then grab a copy and prepare to spend the evening oooing and ahhhing over the fabulous weddings and designer table settings by some of Oklahoma's top event planners.

And of course I tell you this because Lasting Impressions is a featured designer. We used the movie, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" as our inspiration, shooting our black, white and Tiffany blue table at the Tulsa Historical Society on a crisp day last fall. The uber Lisa Dunham of LSD Photos captured the table in a most elegant setting. Elizabeth Wallis of Petal Pushers designed the stunning bridal bouquet and groom's boutenniere. Fabulous china and crystal from Miss Jackson's accented all the linens, florals and paperie that we designed specifically for this photo shoot. And the wonderful Von Wedding Films captured the entire setup on video.

Ta Da - Turquoise - specifically Pantone 15-5519 just announced by the famous trend and coordinating company who steers the boat on color trends.

I couldn't be happier - think of beautiful turquoise water on a pristine beach, (like this one in the Turks and Caicos), perfect gem stones strung on a necklace or if you're lucky that famous little box from Tiffany's bearing a special gift!

This weekend you should plan to attend The Tulsa Wedding Show being held at the Renaissance Hotel here in Tulsa. We'll be there along with about a hundred other wedding vendors. Something we look forward every show is designing a special table top as a display reception table. This year our table will be . . .shades of TURQUOISE.
Be sure to come prepared for the show with comfortable shoes and prepared labels/cards with your wedding contact information ready to hand out for drawings and to vendors that you want to meet with. Include your wedding date, name of bride and groom, a good email and a telephone number for immediate follow up.

I love the gang of twelve! Every year the host gives a fabulous party for his select group of friends, most of whom have been together since college. This year they are mostly turning "40" and so the theme was retro, back to an era (40's) before they were born. Classic Movie Star Couples.

They walked the red carpet to be greeted by "Joe DiMaggio and his flirty wife "Marilyn Monroe". Dinner was catered by the fabulous Chefs On the Run Doug and Chris. Who knows who else may have showed up?

Hello 2010 that is.

Another year flew by like a blur of days and weeks and months. One event after another, each one special and magical for one reason or another. They are ALL my favorites.

So I thought before we close the book on 2009, I’d look back on the year and the memories associated with it. In these times of economic downturn we feel blessed that so many clients trusted Lasting Impressions with some of the most important days of their lives.

The year began with a "bang" as the gang of twelve celebrated New Year's Eve.
